meat: Tom Goss

We caught up with American singer-songwriter Tom Goss ahead of his forthcoming gig in London to find out what's up, talk music and reminisce our beach time in PTown.

How are you and what you up to?

I’m great! I’ve been traveling a lot, performing a lot and trying to balance that with the creation of new content. You know how they say ‘work hard, play hard?’ Well, I’m not great at that, it’s more like ‘work really hard, crash really hard. Play really hard, crash really hard.’ At least nobody can say I’m not on an adventure.

It’s been ages since I’ve seen you…..the last time was in London I think at your show. It was your first London gig right?

Yes! That was so long ago! 2014 I believe. That was a crazy year for me. As soon as I got home from Europe I ruptured my Achilles tendon (the same day I released a new record) and then I moved to Los Angeles. I’m sad it’s taken me so long to get back.

Obviously one of my fondest times with you was our shoot on the beach in Provincetown during bear week. It was so much fun. I was so happy to have you be part of meat What are you memories of that.

I remember it feeling so free and playful. I love Provincetown, it’s a place of possibilities. Everyone there is open to experience, whatever that experience might be. It’s also a place where creation happens and that’s what I loved about walking the beach together. We were exploring and chatting, playing and shooting, but more than anything we were creating. That’s what life should be about.

Did you go to Bear week this year?

I did! I took a couple years off after moving to Los Angeles. It’s so far these days! But I was so happy to be back. I definitely had more fun then I ever had before. I worked a little less and didn’t feel obligated to stick to the typical daily Bear Week schedule. In fact, I didn’t go to a single Tea Dance.

So you’re coming to London in October to play again right?

Yes! I’m performing at the Soho Hotel on October 5th. It’s going to be a fun cabaret affair. They’ve got a beautiful bar and theater space. I’m so lucky to be back and performing in that space!

I love your cover of Son of a Preacher Man and of course the iconic Bears. What’s your favourite song to perform live?

First off, thank you! Secondly, that’s such a hard question. Right now, I’m really loving ‘Round in all the Right Places.’ It’s more or less my follow up to ‘Bears’ and I’ll release the song in a couple weeks (October 11th). It’s fun, cute, sexy and shows off my growth as a lyricist, songwriter and singer. From the first note, you can feel the crowd smiling. Nothing is more pleasurable to me than that.

So you’re working on new music now?

The week before London, I’ll be in Barcelona, finalizing mixes for my new record ‘Territories.’ I’m so very excited for this record. It’s a powerful new departure for me. I can’t wait for folks to hear it. I’ve been performing a couple songs live and it’s been wonderful seeing the audiences soak it all in. Watch out for a release in early 2019!

What are you most looking forward to about returning to London?

The energy and the people! I mean, that’s pretty much the same thing right? London manages to be a huge city, yet feel so quaint and accessible. I love just walking the Thames, taking in the history and seeing future possibilities. In London, old becomes new, yet tradition and energy stays in tact, gets amplified even. Americans just knock everything down and shove the previous generation into a nursing home! And of course, I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

And are you gunna strip off for meat again?

Of course!
