meat: I Was Only Supposed to Do Four Issues…

Back in September, I held a party at 21 Soho in London to celebrate sixteen years of meat and the launch of my new retrospective book, The First Sixteen Years.
As part of the evening, I sat down with Dan, who's been helping me with meat's marketing and PR, for a conversation about the project, how it all started and how something that was originally supposed to be just four little homemade zines has somehow kept me busy for sixteen years.
We chatted about the hundreds of men I've photographed, changing ideas of masculinity, why I've always been interested in photographing ordinary guys, the books, the parties and what meat means to me today. There were also some great questions from the audience, a few laughs and one or two slightly embarrassing revelations.
The conversation was filmed by the lovely Duncan McCabe, and I've finally got around to editing it down into something a little more manageable for anyone who couldn't make it on the night, or who simply fancies hearing me ramble on about meat for half an hour.
I've cut quite a bit from the original recording, so the editing is occasionally a little choppy. Apologies for that, but I'm a photographer, not a film editor, and I thought it was more important to share the conversation than leave it gathering digital dust on my hard drive.
It was a really special evening for me, surrounded by people who've been part of meat's story in one way or another, and I'm so grateful to everyone who came along.
Huge thanks to Dan for asking the questions, Duncan for filming the whole thing and everyone who joined us to celebrate.
Anyway, here it is. Sixteen years of meat, condensed into one conversation. I hope you enjoy it!
